Complexity is only overwhelming if you expect something different. If your models and methods are designed for simple challenges, with closed boundaries, few relevant variables, and a single root cause, then the emergent change in complex systems will be mysterious and frightening. On the other hand, if your tools are designed with complexity in mind, you can see, understand, and influence emergent change, even if you will never predict or control it. In this masterclass you will learn and practice three complexity-inspired tools to help you:
Appreciate the underlying dynamics of complex adaptive systems
See patterns as they emerge out of complex dynamics
Understand your options for action, as well as the risks and benefits of unintended consequences
Take adaptive action to influence change as it happens for you, your family, team, institution, or community
Access resources to continue learning about and building adaptive capacity to engage with complex change on its own terms
Glenda H. Eoyang, PhD and Executive Director of the Human Systems Dynamic Institute, is a pioneer in the applications of complexity science to human and organizational systems, and developed the concept of human systems dynamics (HSD) based on her theoretical and practical research. Glenda participated in the Sioo Systems Festival in 2019 and made a lasting impression with her masterclass and workshops about complex systems. From then on Sioo hoped to intensify the collaboration with Glenda and we are very happy to materialise this in not only this masterclass, but also in offering her 5 day class : ‘Human Systems Dynamics (HSD), Patterns and Possibilities’.
